But
for him, luck has not always been with him. Fall of 2012, as a 23 years old
junior in college, Dong is ready for the new semester and with a big smile to
professor and classmates. At this moment, He never thought that his strong mind
would be suddenly overwhelmed by a simple message. "Dear son, I have bad
news for you, because of a malicious report from a business competitor, our
clothing factory closed down. And we lost the case, lost a lot of money and got
into debt. It took us a long time to tell you this, but now our financial
strength has no way to continue to support you to go to college. It's up to you
now." The smile on his face vanished in an instant, the upheaval of things
was too much for him to accept. It was the first time in his life that he had
missed class. He rushed out of the classroom, ran to his room and closed the
door. At that moment, I felt my life was a joke, that feeling is like when you
are immersed in a warm bed, suddenly woke up by a basin of cold water, I lost,
he said with frustration voice. During those days, many friends who heard about
his situation gave him a lot of comforts. He couldn't sleep a whole night, he
was trying to make himself calm. He had a lot of thought about the future in
his mind. He can't start his business plan any more that he was very sorry to
Jim and Kevin for that. Also, he can't propose to Diana, because he has no more
money left right now. For him now, he can't promise anything about a future
life with her. Every time he thought of it, his heart ached. The sense of
frustration and helplessness broke him again. At one night of those days, after
a long talk, Diana sat beside his bed, holding his hand and she said:
"Dong, for you now, the start will be hard, but you will get to use it.
Trust yourself, you are a man. I know dropping you out of past is hard, but you
can hold it." He didn't say anything. He hugged her, the tears and
determination of change created together at that moment.
Everything
hasn't lost yet, he still has a chance. Only one thought in his mind right now,
he had to start making money by himself immediately. First things first, he
rebuilds his plan for the future in his mind. He is going to find a suitable
job first, make enough money to pay off family debts. As for his tuition, he
plans to apply for a student loan. Pay it back slowly with money from work
behind. Although there may be no way to propose to Diana as before after
graduation from college. But he believes that with his hard work, everything
will be on the right track. He began to send out resumes to many companies what
are every walk of life. But, as for him, international students find a job in
America which could make a lot of money is even impossible. Because of
undergraduate and fewer skills, the knowledge learned from the college could
not use on the real job yet. Thus, there is almost no company would like to
hire him. After he knows the result, somewhat frustrated, he decided to go to
the bar alone for a glass of whiskey. After a little tipsy, he told the fellow
drinker sat next to by him about his experience. His description fully embodies
his worry and fear of failure happened once again. "You never know what
life has in store for you," Dong said. This drinker is the boss of a
travel company. After hearing what had happened to him and his determination,
he decided to let him work for his own company. Another upheaval in his life
left him a little bit unresponsive. For a man in a tight spot, this is a ray of
light. The next morning, the boss took him to the company. After a few
complicated conversations with human resource, at the end of next week, he
finally got a great job what is design the travel program for rich people.
The stereotype for people from China always accompanies with
sarcastic emotion even without conscious. We frequently see how some of the
American people using stereotypes definite or judge people from China subconsciously,
even now. Like, especially for the people who born in the previous generation,
have always with an image what relative Chinese with laundries or all Chinese
people eating dogs. So many people have thought, people live in modern society
the defined others by stereotype is much better than old time. Actually, "so
many people" are just a minority. Based on the interview in the movie,
almost half people from Outside the United States trust, all adult Americans
have a gun, every week will be having "Gun Party". Same things also
happened to people from China, that some people still as a "believer"
with a myth, even is a kid in China, should be incredibly familiar with traditional
self-defense skills, as is well-known, “Kungfu”. Stereotype is hard to change, as
easier, when people receive a first impression or any shocking news by media,
life, or any kind of way, it is impressive and if people have not been exactly
learning what does the real situation go through, people will only have the
original information what has been received.
The American dream as both an idealistic principle, and true
virtue of the United States does indeed exist. Throughout history, numerous
peoples from across the globe have come to the United States and found better
lives here. However, it is still just a "dream" and its promise is an
often overestimated or left unfulfilled for many individuals. Simply put, the
American dream is about people living out their highest ideals as equals.
Awesome job!
