Migration Story Excerpt :
My father stayed in Texas for most of his life, Never did the image of moving to California 1405 miles away from home. My father began working at the age of 5 years old as a butcher making 70 cents an hour. It wasn't uncommon back then for young kids working in unsafe environments but that's what happens back in the day in the boonies as my father would say. Still to this day my father says” Meish be grateful for what you have when I was coming up I was working for nickels and dimes there ain't no reason you can't keep a job “. At the age of 5 he was paying rent his check would be 20$ and he would only be able to keep $7. Every week that was the routine back then 7$ was a lot of money now its chump change .my father says “ money has lost its value “ but then I say “ well did it ever have any real value in the 1st place ?’
My father had family outside of Texas his other brother's sister and mother. His stepfather(bud) which is my aunt Feleisha's father would always come to visit my father down from Oakland California asking “hey man when you gone come down to Oakland and stop playing ?”My father would always say “ I'll see about it I just got off work I gotta go home and pack “. If you would ask me I'll see is my father's favorite line in the book .Mr.Ross my father was working at a recycling center in 1993-94 making 3.65 an hour with no benefits and no personal protective equipment gear to safely do the job.As time went on my grandfather (bud) done made 10 trips down to Texas persuading my father to leave with him. Later in 1994, my father finally made the decision the leave and give Oakland California a chance of life. My Father Had his Sister Brother and Mother waiting for him since they heard the news he was coming down to California. My Grand Mother was really excited because he is her favorite son. My father didn't know what to expect going to Oakland, California but he got on the greyhound for 3 days with the clothes on his back and 2 suitcases in his hands. He had saved up just enough cash for two months like 3000$. This Journey was a whole new experience for him, he had never been outside of the south of Texas. Once my father touched down to Oakland greyhound station he gave his stepsister Sarah a call letting her know that he had arrived. As soon as she arrived with a big smile and open arms the two hugged each other like the feeling of missing an incarcerated sibling. It wasn't like he was out in Oakland alone but it still felt good to see a familiar face. While in the car with Sarah he began to feel a little homesick. At 1st he had spooky gitters being in a new town not used to the environment but as he continues to tour Oakland he became immune to this side of the California lifestyle. My grandpa told him “If you can't make it in Oakland you can't make it nowhere”.
Essay Excerpt 11 :
Migrants help within our communities. They are not accepted on this land. The issue of migrants stories being silenced is a complex one. What it is about migrant's story not being told is lack of acknowledgment of their path here to America. Imagine being a migrant, but your not welcome to that place of the region. Everyone wants to be welcomed with open arms and lovely hearts but the truth is this world is cruel. The controversy in the world today is everything under 1 rule 1 law. Migrants are faced with discrimination. While immigration can cause overpopulation issues, Migrant's story should be told because it encourages entrepreneurship, helps reduce labor shortages and creates a richer diverse culture. Which can help others feel more welcomed when relocating regardless of race class or gender.
When considering the issue of immigrants it is clear that immigrants stories should be told. It is essential to recognize that letting immigrants stories be told includes many great benefits, as such spur of job growth, economic recovery and lower levels of crime. Before one sees research listening to an immigrant might be a horrible idea, I mean really who cares to listen to someone at the bottom of the pyramid if you are on top of it! In fact to be able to hear others stories is a great idea because then people will find things they have in common and network get to know each other from within the soul and not judging a book by its cover vs. being looked at as a certain group of people of a category. If people want to make the world a better place we have to stop judging one another based on stereotypes and come together as 1 we are in charge of how to control this world. Our voices matter everyone voices matter to be heard. Regardless of race, color, class or gender, neither how much income you take home a month. We all share one thing in common is the journey to America or even if you just moved to a different city in the same state we all want to feel welcomed we all want to be appreciated for our hard work and dedication that we serve to this country regardless if it is fighting for the government or not we all offer something to make this world a better place.
