    Cheebah Cheebah y'all
    I need Sativas y'all

    In the 1970s
    NYC wasn't heavenly
The school system for the public
    Was rubbish
    Plus its published
    So you can read thee
    How and why
    its outside
    Of the school and church
    The youth search
    For the truth and worth
    And DJ Kool Herc
    Was the new birth
    politicians were cruel jerks
And the Big Apple was, filled with worms and snakes
They come in many forms and shapes
    The serpent's tool
    Was urban renewal
    An astounding process
    That moved Black and Brown
    To housing projects
    While vile
    Land lords
    Made the Bronx
    Resemble Vietnam War
Can you believe thee mad men ?
    Even Reggie Jackson
    Was treated stanky
And he was the best player on the Yankee
    Baseball Teams
    Race of all things,
    Is used for separation
    And since welfare isnt reparations
City streets are filled with desperation
    This is the bridge
    Which gives kids
    A lift and that's big

In the heart of the Bronx
A new art form was launched
To abstain from the gangs , amongst other thangs
    Teens need an outlet
    Rappers Delight wasn't out yet.

  2. To my surprise English 1A (Eng 1A) provided me with an opportunity to research 20th century migration from a historical perspective. Eng 1A also afforded me the chance to explore the migration of my own ancestors and upon completing my interview (research) for this assignment I gained priceless information pertaining to my ancestors who participated in the Great Migration.

When Ken was growing up his maternal grandmother (Ethelyn Calhoun - Anderson) was his greatest friend, so he received most of his family's history from her. Ethelyn developed a heavy case of Alzheimer's and she passed away in October of 2017. Being that Ethelyn was a major source of family history Ken decided to interview her youngest sister (Della Calhoun -Briggs) . This essay is based on the information he gathered while conducting that interview with his great aunt Ms Della.

Growing up Ken always wondered where his maternal Grandmother and her siblings got their "country accent" from especially since Ken's mother did not speak with an accent at all. This mystery sparked a lifelong interest in how his family got to Oakland Ca. At an early age he(Ken) began asking questions and as the years progressed he got pieces of family history sort of like a jigsaw puzzle. Those family pieces were composed of his family tree which included his families migration from the Southern U.S to the West .

Ken D Camell ll was born at Samuel Merritt Hospital in Oakland California and like most Oakland natives Ken grew to be proud of where he was from. Ken was even prouder of his grandmother, great grandmother (Estelle Grey - Calhoun) and his great aunts and great uncles. These brave people uprooted and took a leap of faith becoming migrants in the Great Migration.

Ken needed to know why his family participated in the Great Migration therefore he contacted his great aunt Ms. Della who made Ken's day when she agreed to give to an interview and provide a first hand account of the Great Migration.

Ms Della revealed she was born in Monroe, Louisiana in October of 1944. Her father (Roger Calhoun Sr) passed away in 1956 and this event influenced her mother to sell their farm and move the family to Berkeley Ca. The Calhoun's chose Berkeley,Ca over Los Angeles, Ca because that's where their neighbors relocated and more importantly were having success finding gainful employment. Most of the Calhoun family embarked on the 2000 mile journey via train while a few of the male children stayed behind to complete the sale of the farm. Within the next 16 months the whole Calhoun family had successfully completed the voyage from Monroe, Louisiana to Berkeley California. By 1966 Calhoun family had swiftly adapted to their new hometown i.e. Naomi (the eldest daughter) and her husband bought a corner store market on 55th and Gaskill located in Oakland Ca. A few of the Calhoun sons started their own electrical service in Emeryville Ca. A few of Calhoun daughters became school teachers (Ethelyn was one of them). 3 of the Calhoun sons fought in World War ll, the War in Korea and The Vietnam War. The younger Calhoun siblings found their niche in the Social Services sector.

Based on the interview with Ms Della, Ken reached the conclusion that once you uncover the roots it often reflects the fruit which the tree bares. Ken has some large shoes to fill and he's honored to share the DNA of such confident pioneers. Ken always wanted to know how his family became immigrants in the Great Migration and with all of data provided by Ms. Della his family tree is almost complete. Uncovering your families roots results in self discovery and this assignment did just that enabling Ken to appreciate his ancestor's sacrifices.

  3. The Myth of the Criminal Migrant is an article written by Anna Fong published through The Marshall Project . Anna reveals how Robert Adelman (Sociologist of the University of New York at Buffalo) and The Marshall Project conducted a long term study (1980 - 2006) and concluded that immigrations rates increased by 109% in U.S metro areas however violent crime decreased by 23% in these same areas. The statistics clearly debunk false stereotypes perpetuated by White Supremacy (Donald Trump) that portray immigrants as lawless criminals who invaded the U.S with intentions of saleing drugs, raping American women and killing American citizens.

One resolution to eliminate immigration persecution is to stop passing legislation that locks people up for non violent offences i.e. drug posession and crossing borders. From plantations to prisons, from reform schools to juvenile hall, from refugee camps to detention centers the U.S has an addiction to locking people up, especially melanated people. As an alternative the U.S needs to implement urban farming training programs. "Train as oppose to detain and then educate as oppose to incarcerate"- KiN Camell (google that).

    1. As a community call to action I propose a solution that will reduce the harsh treatment immigrants are subjected to. The solution consist of treating people the way you want to be treated aka practicing the golden rule. Maybe one day humans can live by the golden rule along with some encouragement from parents and schools to teach children to embrace other cultures not just their own and only then will America be the land of the free. In these times of reemerging White Supremacy the U.S must combat racial conflict with humane resolutions and progressive entities like the Marshall Project. The Marshall Project is a non partisan organization whose mission is to bring attention to the out dated U.S Criminal Justice system.
